30DC - Easier Blogging with Flock!

Ed Dale, in The 30 Day Challenge, has recommended that we use Flock for this year's challenge and WordPressDirect to host our actual blogs.  Both are great tools but the real beauty is how well these can be married to make blogging easier than ever before.

Having to log into your web site each time you want to blog something can be a real pain in the butt!  But, using Flock, you can avoid all that hassle and blog DIRECTLY from your browser!  Oftentimes, I will just select some text on a page, right-click it and then select "Blog This!".  When Flock's blog-editor window opens, it's already quoted the text I want to blog and it's already linked back to the main site for me!

Imagine how easy that could make adding content to your 30DC blogs?  You just need to add a few comments (2-5 paragraphs) under the quoted text and you're done!  Also, Flock's blog editor has much better image-editing capabilities than WordPressDirect.  Instead of doing weird things like typing in %IMAGE% where you want one to appear, you can simply upload your images to your Facebook/Flickr/Picasa account using Flock's built-in image-uploader and then link to them inside the blog-editor in the same way you might do in a Microsoft Word document.

WAY better than using WordPressDirect's upload form ;)  (PS:  I love WPD, I just don't like their blog editor!)

NB: Probably the best reason to blog with Flock is that you don't have to bother with HTML code, you can just select text, and choose to link it, bold it and so on.  It's much easier and faster than doing the HTML yourself which, of course, means you can make more blogs and make more money using the 30DC methods :)

So, without further ado, here's how you do it...

Step 1: Click Open Blog Editor

Step 2: Click Configure

Step 3: Click Add a New Blog

Step 4: Tell Flock Where Your Blog is Hosted

In this step, you want to select "I host my blog, or the service I use is not listed".  Then just type in your WordPressDirect.com address.  This might be your own domain or a subdomain provided by WordPressDirect.com themselves.  Example:

Other Service

Then click Next

Now just wait a bit...

...while Flock figures out what kind of blog you have.  It does this automatically for all WordPress blogs.  For other blogs, you may have to do a bit more work but you won't have to worry about that if you're following Ed's lessons.

Step 5: Type in Your Login Details

In most cases, your username will be "admin" and your password will be the same one you used when you created your WordPressDirect.com account.  But, if you can't remember what that was, fear not!  Simply login to your WordPressDirect.com account and...

Click:
Website Settings

On the screen that comes up next, you'll see your login details.  Take them from there and just copy and paste those details into Flock!

Your username and password here:
WordPressDirect Settings

Should end up here:
Login Details Form

Click Finish and you're done!

All in all, this should take you about ONE MINUTE!  If you don't know your WordPressDirect login details, it might take you TWO ;)

Once you've done this, you can simply click Open Blog Editor each time you want to blog something and start typing! No waiting for your blog to load, no logging in first, nothing :)

And, remember, you can select any text on any web page and then right-click and choose "Blog This" to blog it!  Sweet! :D

Enjoy!  Blogging with Flock is MUCH easier than any other blogging software I've ever used before!<!-- technorati tags begin -->

Excellent idea, I'd not thought of that. I'll give it a go this afternoon - thanks :)

I'm new to blogging and appreciate your Floc tutorial. It was simple - and took less than minute!

What are your thoughts in Scribe Fire compared to Flock for blogging?

What would be involved in uploading a new theme (would it screw up the WordPress Direct settings)?

Thanks again!

Norio

I used to use ScribeFire in Firefox before I used Flock. Honestly, I think Flock's blog-editor is EASIER but ScribeFire is more powerful.

Flock seems to make everything easier and prettier so I'll probably use it forever. Blogging can become a chore when you're busy so I'll always choose the easiest method available just to make sure I do it.

I wouldn't recommend changing your theme to something that isn't supported by WPD as they've put some special features into the themes they're using so you'd be missing out on that.

But, if you're keen, I can investigate it tomorrow and post another tutorial for changing your WPD theme to any other WordPress theme available out there. Let me know by commenting :)

Norio

Thanks to both you guys for commenting. I really appreciate it!

Great info - I noticed it a while ago but have not used it, but I intend to from now on. Thanks!!!

Thanks for a great tutorial. I'm not using Wordpress on the blog above, but Blogger. Works like magic.
May you succeed like you imagine it to be

Really helpful post! Thanks so much. I'm going to try this out now! :)

Ally

Fabulous post! I must say though, I am also using flock and I use it a bit differently to blog!

When I blog, I pretty much HAVE TO have an image attached (I'm a girl, it looks pretty. Get used to it).

When I find a pic (or web addy or text or anything) that I want to keep for later, and possibly blog about, I make sure that i click the little Web Clipboard Sidebar in flock, and simply drag everything across. When I am ready to blog, I click on the image and click on "Blog" and it embeds the image into my blog post!

Hope this helps someone out there. Once again - great blog!!

Norio

Totally agree, Ally :) Blog posts without pics get purdy boring and, the thing is, Flock makes it so easy to post pics in your blog posts that it's just plain silly not to :P

I love it's photo-uploader as well. I use it to stick my own pics in a Facebook album (called "blog pics") so that I can link to them easily without worrying about the links changing at some point.

Great reply, thanks for sharing :) :) :)

This hasn't worked for me. When I try the hosting my own blog thing flock comes back with an error that says that it hasn't found any "API" in the site so it doesn't work. Not sure what that means.

Norio

What type of blog are you trying this on? WordPress? Blogger? Something else?

Thanks for the great post It was most helpful

Norio, you were kind enough two or three months ago to point me at this your very useful blog post. At the time I hadn't yet got a blog.

Now I've got a blog, and I should have come straight to this page again, because it's so cool! I was timed out of creating a WPD post today (it involved a load of faffing with complicated affiliate urls and photos) and if I'd taken your advice earlier it wouldn't have happened.

I shall be pointing my chums at this webpage. Thanks!

Norio

It's my pleasure, isha :) Enjoy blogging with Flock!
